Viper SmartStart App Surpasses One Million Downloads

Vista, California (8/16/2011) - Directed Electronics today announced that its Viper SmartStart smartphone app has surpassed a major milestone: one million app downloads.

According to Mike Simmons, Executive VP of Directed Electronics: “One million downloads is a huge milestone, but we’re not slowing down. Our objective from the beginning has been to lead the keyless lifestyle revolution. We're eliminating the need to carry a heavy bundle of keys if you already carry a smartphone. Viper SmartStart created this category, and though we now have imitators, none of them can match the features, affordability and reliability of Viper SmartStart.

“Viper SmartStart has received great accolades from the media and our customers, including the CES Best of Innovations award, hundreds of news stories and placement in an iPhone TV ad,” said Simmons. “Our latest product, Viper SmartStart GPS, was recently featured in the New York Times. All this attention really speaks to how the SmartStart value proposition resonates with customers.”

After Viper SmartStart hardware is installed in a car, tapping a button in the free smartphone app allows users to start the car, lock & unlock the doors, pop the trunk, and panic the horn or siren. Viper SmartStart GPS adds family safety and social networking features including teen safety monitoring, speed alerts and Facebook check-in. The SmartFence and HotSpot features let users quickly draw a circle around a location on the map and then receive alerts if the family vehicle leaves or enters that zone.

The Viper SmartStart hardware is available at Best Buy and thousands of local Viper retailers in the U.S. and Canada. The app is available on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.

Customers can add Viper SmartStart to their Viper security or remote start system for $199, or they can buy a complete Viper SmartStart system starting at $299. Service plans start at about $3 per month. For more information and a store locator or to download the free app, please visit
